Sustaining its relentless enforcement efforts in stemming the flow of drugs into Singapore, CNB arrested a syndicate leader on 16 March 2010 at around 9.25pm. A total of 220.67 grams of ‘Ice’, 7.7 grams of heroin, 30 ‘Erimin-5’ tablets with a street value of approximately $78,630, and 4 samurai swords were seized. CNB had been watching him since February 2010, after we received a tip-off that he had been involved in the trafficking of ‘Ice’. CNB’s investigations revealed that he obtained his supply of drugs from an overseas syndicate using multiple couriers to smuggle the drugs into Singapore. On 8 March 2010, CNB officers arrested his 33-year-old male Malay courier (Singapore Citizen) at Woodlands Checkpoint. A search was conducted on him and approximately 253 grams of ‘Ice’ were found from his bag. Arrest of syndicate leader On 16 March 2010, CNB received information that the syndicate leader had plans to send another courier (believed to be his girlfriend) to collect a fresh consignment of drugs from overseas, and to re-packing the drugs at a HDB unit in Ang Mo Kio. An operation was immediately launched. At about 8.40pm, CNB officers saw the syndicate leader returning to the flat with his girlfriend and a male associate. Shortly after the three suspects entered the unit, another man and his female companion were seen leaving the unit. The couple, a 27 year-old Indian male and a 26 year-old female Malay (both Singapore Citizens) was subsequently arrested by another team of CNB officers laying in ambush at the lift landing of the HDB block in Ang Mo Kio. At about 9.25pm, CNB officers moved in and raided the HDB unit in Ang Mo Kio. The syndicate leader was arrested together with his girlfriend and the male associate. A search was conducted in the unit and 220.67 grams of ‘Ice’, 7.7 grams of heroin, 30 Erimin-5 tablets, 1 digital weighing scale, some drug paraphernalia were seized from the master bedroom and common bedroom. Also seized from the master bedroom were 4 swords and a knife. The weapons have been referred to our Home Team partner, the Singapore Police Force for investigations. The 51-year-old male Indian syndicate leader and his 23 year-old Javanese girlfriend will be investigated for drug trafficking offences. Investigations on the 27 year-old Indian male are on-going. All are Singapore Citizens. Penalties If convicted, the syndicate leader and his Javanese girlfriend could face a minimum of 20 years' imprisonment and 15 strokes of the cane, or a maximum 30 years' or life imprisonment and 15 strokes of the cane. CNB will continue with its vigorous enforcement action against illicit activities and to stem the flow of drugs into Singapore. Central Narcotics Bureau 17 March 2010 | |
